Selank

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) with anxiolytic and nootropic properties, originally developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences and structurally derived from the endogenous immunomodulator tuftsin.

Pharmacological Mechanism

Selank's anxiolytic effect is based on modulation of the GABAergic system without producing the classic side-effect profile associated with benzodiazepines. The peptide influences the expression of BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor) as well as the activity of enkephalins and other endogenous opioid peptides. Selank simultaneously inhibits enkephalin-degrading enzymes, resulting in prolonged availability of these neuroactive substances within the synaptic cleft. Through serotonergic signaling pathways, the compound also exhibits a mood-stabilizing component that has been consistently observed in preclinical models.

In Russian clinical trials, Selank was used under the brand name Selank as an approved anxiolytic, primarily for generalized anxiety disorder and neurotic conditions. Beyond its anxiolytic effects, research documented cognitive improvements in memory consolidation, learning speed, and mental clarity. These nootropic properties are attributed to increased BDNF synthesis and enhanced dopaminergic neurotransmission. Particularly noteworthy is the absence of sedative potential: Selank produces anxiolysis without the cognitive blunting typical of classical anxiolytics.
